UMY's Student had found out oxygen therapy devices more effectivelly through timer

Yogyakarta- Having personal experience with oxygen therapy devices, which he judged still manually so that still less effective and efficient in its use, a student of Electrical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Mohammad Fadli Damopolii, then compelled to modify the tool so it can be a new tool that have proved effective and efficient in regulating the volume of oxygen and oxygen-term expenditure.

This was conveyed by Fadli when presenting the results of his work on The Oxygen Therapy Equipment Controller Based-Microcontroller, in Kampus Terpadu UMY, Friday (04/08/2011).

It  was told by by him when he was sick and required to undergo inpatient treatment at a hospital, he saw the oxygen therapy equipment which paired on him still look manually because some health workers have to wait until the tool stops doing oxygen therapy. "This happens because the tool does not yet have a timer to set how long it will be used in therapy so that health officials had to wait for," he said.

According to him, a respiratory disease is one disease that many found almost in every hospital. He realizes the disease can be fatal if it does not handle properly, immediately, fastly, and in accordance with health care. "A person's health status can be known in several ways, one of them is by detecting the number of breaths generated by that person. This is what then makes the breath as an indicator of health is as important as the heart or blood pressure, " explained Fadli.

Based on the number of breaths resulted by a person, then health workers can know the content of oxygen therapy that will be required by him in the next treatment and subsequent handling. "Oxygen therapy can be given to patients who show symptoms of shortness of breath and patients who undergo surgery," said Fadli. Oxygen therapy is one of the respiratory therapy to maintain adequate tissue oxygenation, especially to overcome the state of hypoxemia or shortness of breath in accordance with blood gas analysis of breath and lower employment.

But in reality, Fadli saw oxygen therapy is still using manual means and equipment so that health workers often have difficulty in measuring the amount of oxygen to the patient. "To overcome this, I assess that there is a need to make a tool that can help health practitioners so that giving oxygen therapy will be more efficient," said Fadli.

Therefore, Fadli also made modifications to the Controlling Equipment Oxygen Therapy by using a microcontroller as the central data processing and motor rotation control valve stepper as oxygen cylinders. These components, according to him are interrelated so that they can be a control tool toward the use of oxygen in oxygen therapy.

Moreover, Fadli explained if the instrument to control the provision of oxygen therapy was made in accordance with the conditions and circumstances that are common in hospitals. "But in the tools which are currently available, the application of oxygen therapy in the treatment of patients still using manual methods without using microcontroller component so that oxygen delivery was less optimal," he added.

Fadli presented an alternative use of components of microcontrollers had more advantages compared with manual tools on oxygen therapy at present. In accuracy side, the alternative of microcontroller was more accurate and faster. "In addition, by the presence of the control panel on a microcontroller, a health practitioner can more easily provide dose levels and oxygen consumption so that the proper use of oxygen can be based on the needs of patients. Time and energy released by the health workers are also more efficient, "he explained.

These savings occurred when health workers have been doing therapy, they no longer need to think about when to stop therapy because this tool has been equipped with a timer that enabled it to stop in when you have specified before.

 

The automation of these oxygen cylinders make the tool capable of regulating the volume of oxygen and oxygen-term expenditure. "This tool is also capable of reducing oxygen wasted in vain, as it often occurs in the process of oxygen therapy which is done manually," said Fadli. As a tool that has a portable structure then it is possible for the tool to move from one to another tube easily.
