Altering The Evil Does Not Have to Be through ‘Fierce’ Means

MUHAMMADIYAH.ID, SLEMAN - Muhammadiyah remains strong since it was established on a diniyah basis instead of a contemporary aspect. Thus, Muhmmadiyah can become a great and sturdy movement till now.

The aforementioned statements were declared by General Chairman of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir at Pengajian Ramadan (Ramadan Preaching) conducted by Muhammadiyah Regional Board of Sleman at Pendopo Rumah Dinas of Regent of Sleman.

According to Haedar, K.H. Ahmad Dahlan founded Muhammadiyah based on Al-Qur’an, surah Ali Imron verse 104 precisely. The verse is foundation for Muhammadiyah as a movement focusing on amar ma’ruf nahi munkar (commanding the good and forbidding the evil).

“Mentioned on Ali Imron verse 104, ‘And let there be [arising] from you a nation ….’. The nation does not refer to people in general but the chosen intellectual ones. Hence, Muhammadiyah members should be selected smart people,” conveyed Haedar.

Besides, Muhammadiyah possesses tough ideology yielded from notions of K.H. Ahmad Dahlan and then becoming essential guidelines. Therefore, Muhammadiyah is an Islamic movement that Al-Qur’an and As Sunnah are the guidelines as well as a movement developing ijtihad to find the straight path.

“A characteristic of Muhammadiyah and the people is always upholding amar ma’ruf nahi munkar. If possible, we can alter it through power of an individual or group, but it must be in accordance with Muhammadiyah principles (see Muhammadiyah Identity),” explained Haedar.

Haedar’s explanation also neglected an issue that Muhamamdiyah loses vigor of amar ma’ruf nahi munkar. Muhammadiyah has its own means to implement it.

“Indeed, shifting the evil does not have to be through ‘fierce’ ways,” emphasized Haedar.

He added that, if it deals with principles, we may not be feeble, but we should remain proportional.

“Amar ma’ruf nahi munkar should go hand in hand with being uswatun hasanah (a role model),” asserted Haedar.

The significance of applying the Muhammadiyah Identity to run a movement aims to maintain public trust to Muhammadiyah. Many actors of politics and other areas have overlooked history so that they misunderstand and cripple it as well as omit its integrity.

“We may lose everything, but our integrity. Self-integrity is a life bet. We may have nothing, except our trust and responsibility,” stressed Haedar.

Flashing back to history when Buya Hamka was in conflict and detained by the Old Order Government, relations between government and Muhammadiyah were awful till President Soekarno did not attend a closing of Muhammadiyah Congress in Palembang, 1962.

However, the circumstance did not discourage vigor of amar ma’ruf nahi munkar of Muhamamdiyah figures as Ahmad Baidowi, Mas Mansur, and others to attempt break the ice between the government and Muhammadiyah through having a dialog and negotiation. Ultimately, at the closing Soekarno stated ‘Makin Lama, Makin Cinta’ (The Longer, the More Love.

Regarding national issues, Haedar advised that after general elections 2019 it is essential to conducting democratic, economic, and cultural consolidation since the three aspects are moving to a liberal side. Meanwhile, to reinforce a basis of Muhammadiyah, Haedar highlighted five aspects, namely religious comprehension, Muhammadiyah ideology, a movement system, charity, and leadership.
