Recognizing Huge Impacts of Hoaxes, UNISA Conducts a Workshop on Hoax Busting and Digital Hygiene

MUHAMMADIYAH.ID, SLEMAN –Department of Communication Science of Universitas Aisyiyah Yogyakarta (Unisa) collaborated with the Google News Initiative (GNI), Internews, and the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) to conduct Halfday Basics Workshop on ‘Hoax Busting and Digital Hygiene’ at Building of A.305, Unisa.

In her remark, Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Social Sciences, and Humanities of Unisa Tri Hastuti Nur Rochimah stated that we are digital citizens.

“It is inevitable that we should learn situations of digital citizens. Talking about hoaxes, we need to recognize fake news and hate speech. Muhammadiyah has fiqh of information, including what Muhammadiyah people have to do as digital citizens,” declared Tri, who is also Secretary of the Central Board of ‘Aisyiyah on Friday (5/7).

It is obviously mentioned on Surah Al-Hujurat that we must avoid negative assumption since it brings huge impacts. “Hoaxes have existed long time since the era of Adam and Hawa. They came down from Paradise to earth due to a hoax from iblees (devil). Adam and Hawa, then, repented of what they did,” explained Tri.

Why do we need to be cautious? Tri conveyed that hoaxes have brought enormous impacts on community. Hence, the workshop is a part of literacy so that we will be smarter to live in this digital era.

“I would like to thank all partners for having collaboration with the department. I wish that we could enhance our knowledge and ability in confronting hoaxes,” expected Tri.
