Technology Development Should Concur with Science and Character Reinforcement

MUHAMMADIYAH.ID, SURAKARTA - Holistic education integrates intelligence, emotion, and intellectual as an answer to a disruption era of social values due to information technology (IT).

The notion was declared by General Chairman of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir at a Senate Open Session of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) for the Inauguration of Sofyan Arif as a Professor of Educational Management on Thursday (8/8).

Quoting an American sociologist Francis Fukuyama, Haedar stated that this era generates more liberal democracy. The age of information technology enhances welfare and bears future hopes, but disrupts basic values of humanity concurrently.

Information technology without entire science and character reinforcement leads to social disruption including the loss of human nature, family disruption, and unwanted children.

Haedar advised to contemplate an educational system initiated by K.H. Ahmad Dahlan fusing religious values and development. Haedar contended that today’s educational system entails K.H. Ahmad Dahlan’s educational system to preserve humanity.

According to Haedar, besides implementing the holistic educational system, educational institutions should engage families and social environment in taking roles in improving future generations’ humanitarian values.

“Hence, Muhammadiyah should take roles in reinforcing and ameliorating the loss of social values because of information technology development. This movement may offer solutions to the humanitarian issues through its charity, figures’ thoughts, and other supporting instruments,” asserted Haedar.
