Diversity Models of Muslims

MUHAMMADIYAH.ID, YOGYAKARTA – General Chairman of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir stated the significance of understanding diversity models of Muslims in a virtual meeting with university members of Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) on Tuesday (19/6).

“Muslims as individuals and groups are ones who become good and moderate or wasathiyah models and play historical roles as syuhada ‘alan nas.  Elaborating khair (being good), wasathiyah (being moderate, and syuhada ‘alan nas is adequate to be Muslims,” conveyed Haedar.

He explained that all noble values in religion and based on conscience as well as social perspectives are the ones which do not contrast with religious values so that the values should be a lifestyle of Muslims to live in society. The implementation of the excellent values, then, will bring great impacts on a legal and state system.

“Wasathiyah is to be moderate in believing in religion and to have balance between the mundane matters and the hereafter as well as between spirituality and physical aspects.  Thus, Muslims should learn how to maintain their health and lifestyle. For instance, they stop eating before they are full. Another example is that they also try to do fasting,” mentioned Haedar.

Haedar, who is a professor at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), concluded that Islam is an answer of the life and becomes guidance as one of the components is maqashid syariah, maintaining the soul.

“Combining piety, faith, Islam, and ihsan will mold characteristics of khair, wasathiyah and syuhada ala al-nas," contended Haedar.
