Malang-Center for the Study of Religion and Multiculturalism (Pusam) Graduate School of University of Malang (UMM) in collaboration with the Oslo Coalition Norwegian to design Sharia curriculum and Human Rights (HAM) to Masters level. Activities held to date is professional conference that lasted three days starting Monday (06/13) at UMM education Inn hotel.
Pusam Coordinator Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin explained that this activity was follow-up of workshops and several other activities held by Pusam and the Oslo Coalition since January this year. Both sides agreed to hold shortcourse similarly with level Masters of Sharia and human rights at UMM. "In 2012, insya Allah, the shortcourse class will be opened. The professor would be co-professionals from UMM, Norway, Australia, Malaysia and human rights experts and sharia in Indonesia, "he explained.
In a welcome remark, the rector Dr. Muhadjir Effendy viewed Sharia and human rights topics necessarily to discuss scientifically, in serious international scale. However, a variety of perspectives on Sharia and human rights of each country is different and has its own uniqueness. This issue has become world issue, but each country does not necessarily have the same level of concern, Indonesia, in particular UMM paid great attention to this issue.
"In Indonesia solely, there are many alternatives to implement human rights. Islamic law is understood and applied in unique. I think we need to re-refer to the Qur'an and Sunna more seriously by doing deep reinterpretation to be able to understand what the essence of Islamic law is , "said the rector.
Furthermore, through the conference the rector hoped it could find inspiration that would become meeting point of all religions to apply human rights. In Islamic teachings, the implementation of applicable laws by Prophet Muhammad also needed to be excavated in accordance with the context. "So it is important to explore how the possibility of how Sharia can be adapted by the Muslims, and not only Muslims but also all the followers of other religions," he continued.
In this conference, about seven of Sharia and human rights professionals from various countries attended. Among others from Norway, Australia, the United States and Malaysia. Meanwhile, from Indonesia, former rector of UIN Kalijaga Yogyakarta Prof Dr M. Amin Abdullah and UIN Sharif Hidayatullah Jakarta lecturer Dr Musdah Mulia also had her presentation.
Director of the Oslo Coalition Lena Larsen said her party wanted to encourage and develop human rights education worldwide. Cooperation with the UMM was one step to strengthen the enforcement of Sharia and human rights truly one another, she said, was also compatible.
Lena, who is a Muslim, said there were personal reasons for wishing to promote inter-religious tolerance and religious freedom around the world. According to her, in religion, in the history of prophet Adam angels, jinn and the devil told to prostrate to man by God. This was not shirk in which humans was prostrated. But this was the highest honor that man was creature that had become the most respected in nature, even by an angel though. "So to recognize the uniqueness of human and freedom of choice given by God as recognition of God's creation. Freedom to choose is the power of God, "he said.
In line with Lena, Brett Scharps from the United States and Norway's Tore Lindholm suggested something similar. Understanding Shariah and human rights could not be seen partially, but as a whole, and each case had reason and different approaches. "That is why schools of Sharia and human rights are relevant to preparing the professional in its field," said Lindholm.
