University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) closed the event introduction of study for new students (Pesmaba) which had been held for three days on Monday (08/22) at UMM Dome. UMM Rector, Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, MAP, said all Pesmaba participants are officially declared a UMM student.
Meanwhile, General Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah, Prof. Dr. Din Syamsudin gave a speech as well as closed this year Pesmaba event. A number of 5927 new students colored the UMM Dome with red and white suit colors. In the midst of the event, UMM gave a surprise to thousands of new students with a video playback titled "Jas Merah Kampus Putih (Red Coat White Campus, trans.)". It tells the story of nationalism. The actors are UMM freshmen who came from rural areas in Timika, Papua.
Through his speech, Din Syamsudin said that he were proud to prospective leaders of nations that have been declared as a large family of UMM. Although not all new students came from Muhammadiyah big family, but Din asked permission to give a welcome to new students as a big family of Muhammadiyah. "Welcome to the big family of Muhammadiyah. You are all very grateful to be UMM students because from the great number of high school graduates, you are elected as members of UMM academic community," said Din Syamsudin.
"UMM is one of the excellent educational centers of Muhammadiyah. White Campus means clean and pure. Let the jacket is red, but the heart is pure. Students are the ones who hold akhlakul karimah. Be smart students. Be students who ‘go ... go ... to success, be the best, excellent, and be the winner’," said he while closing the Pesmaba 2011.
Din said that being a tough and characterized student is an ideal to strive for. Being an intelligent student is important. "I believe that UMM students are intelligent students with high IQs. It is impossible for you to be accepted here as students if you don’t have the high ones."
In addition, Islam challenged his people to utilize the mind. "You all are beings who are willing and able to use the mind. There are some people who do not utilize the so-called irrational minds. Criticism is a characteristic of intelligent students who are able to select and think forward; having critical thinking, always asking question why to search for answer and causal factors," said Din.
Din also gave advice to the new students. He said that being tough is displayed by attitude of not willing to give up. According to him, being part of academic community would face many challenges. It is no need to despair because in Islam despair is characteristic of infidels. "Being a university student are not like high school student. Lecturer is not like teacher. Lecturers should be chased. So, do not despair in the chasing and facing the challenges," he said to motivate 5972 new students.
In addition to having character and competitive mentality, Din ordered the new students to remain being students with character, decency, courtesy, and wisdom. "It is not easy, but it is certainly possible. I have a motto ‘why not the best’? If others can, then why can’t I to be the best," said Din recounted his experience.
The new students were very enthusiastic responding his speech at the closing ceremony of Pesmaba. They were all scrambled to use the momentum of sharing with Din.
Noval, a new student from Kendari responded by asking how to be smart, tough, and characterized student in a campus environment. Din advised not to be easily affected and should be consistent in straight.
Meanwhile, a new student of English department asked for tips not to be affected with unbeneficial activities outside campus. Din suggested that students not only should focus on their learning, but also should participate actively on organizations. According to Din, organization has a lot of benefits to support study, but it should not abandon study. There are many activities that rely on muscle, but students must rely on the brain. White campus must be cleared from the groups that littered the campus like terrorist.
Furthermore, there was Bambang Tiawan. He is new student who previously had herded goats around UMM Dome for years in order to be able attending school. He has now succeeded enrolled at FPP UMM. He commented about students’ mentality of not appreciating poor people like him. Din was very appreciative on Bambang’s struggle because leader candidates are required to be strong and characterized.
"It means that you have already had additional value compared to other students. You have had experience before enrolling the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry. It is rarely owned by other students. There is no one who underestimates you, the poor, or FPP. Indonesia is an agrarian country. Thus, assistance to farmers and livestock farmers is really needed. However, do not be proud to be the poor and do not make being the poor as a profession. It's okay to be the poor right now, but always trying and aspiring to be rich. There is no one who underestimates you or the poor," said Din corrected Bambang’s question.
