Muhammadiyah Members Had to Choose the President Based on Their Conscience

Jakarta – Chairman of Muhammadiyah Central Executive, Syafiq A. Mughni affirmed that Muhammadiyah Member to choose the next Indonesian President based on their conscience, not based on persuasion of negative campaign between the two candidates. This is due to the fact that ethics and morals are the main point of Muhammadiyah teaching.

“I think it is a common thing for Muhammadiyah members to choose their president not based on money politics or black campaign, which currently widespread in the society, our member should choose because they think he is able and considered the best,” he said by phone on Saturday (6/21).

Meanwhile, responding the news that included his statement about 90% of Muhammadiyah will choose a certain candidate, Syafiq A. Mughni denied it. “Where does that calculation come from? There is no such data. I never said anything like that, perhaps other Muhammadiyah figures,” he said. Syafiq added, in the interview done after Saerasehan in Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta (6/20), he only talked about the black campaign and never said anything about supporting a particular candidate. Furthermore, based on the decision of Tanwir Muhammadiyah Samarinda, Central Executive of Muhammadiyah will issue Maklumat Kebangsaan, which stated that Muhammadiyah will not support a particular candidate, and Muhammadiyah member will be able to choose based on the criteria included in the Maklumat.
