Six Figures of Muhammadiyah Got UMM Award

Six leaders of Muhammadiyah will receive an award from the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). The figures are considered to have exceptional dedication in moving Muhammadiyah da’wah in education and developing international networks. The award, named UMM Award for Muhammadiyah figures will be given by UMM Rector, Muhadjir Effendy, to his family in the graduation ceremony on Saturday (6/9) at UMM Dome.

 

The sixth figures are (late) KH Drs. Azhar Bashir Ahmad, MA; (late) H Sudarsono Prodjokusumo; (late) Drs. H Muh. Djazman Al-Kindi; (late) dr. Muh. suherman; (late) Drs. H Sutrisno Muhdam ​​and (the late) Dr. (Hc) HM Lukman Harun. "Lukman Harun has brought Muhammadiyah figures to the international world, while the other five are consistent pioneering figures and fight for the development of education to the developing world as it is now," said the rector.

Rector stated in Muhammadiyah there are many figures who have had a major contribution to the nation. Their roles are well-known public at large. But the fact showed that many young generations do not know them although there are many outstanding figures. It could be a problem because a role model and exemplary leaders is necessary. That is why UMM raised the six names of the characters, in addition to UMM effort to respect them by taking AR Fahruddin and KH Bedjo Darmoleksono as the name of the mosque in UMM, the largest private campus.

 

UMM Award ceremony was one of a series of the 50th Anniversary of UMM. In addition to the award for the leaders of Muhammadiyah, UMM gave the UMM Award previously for the Nation Leaders to (late) Taufik Kiemas. The award was received by the 5th President of Indonesia who was also his deceased wife, Megawati Sukarnoputri, last June.

 

In the procession of the awards at UMM Dome, family leaders will receive a UMM Award plaque and ex-gratia of UMM. The former chairman of Muhammadiyah, Prof. Dr. Syafii Maarif is scheduled to give testimony about the six figures. Syafii Maarif, professor of the history, will not only convey the history of the characters, but also draw inspiration from them. The following are the brief profiles of six leaders of Muhammadiyah receiving UMM Award.

 

1 Dr. (Hc) HM Lukman Harun

 

Lukman Harun was born in Lima Puluh Kota of West Sumatra on May 6, 1934 and passed away in Jakarta on April 8, 1999 at the age of 64 years. Aside from being a leader of Muhammadiyah, he was also known as an accomplished diplomat and international Islamic activists. One of his achievements was his position as secretary general of the Asian Conference on Religion and Peace (ACRP).

 

At the end of the Old Order, Lukman was quite vocal activists who suppressed the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI). At that time, he became the leader of the people action of suppressing Gestapu. Because of some of his works, he was appointed as member of the House of Representatives representing Muhammadiyah in 1967-1971.

 

Lukman's involvement made the organization of Muhammadiyah grow rapidly in terms of foreign relations. That's because Lukman was very active in establishing the lobby with the international community, especially the Muslim world. Because of its role, Muhammadiyah is often invited to attend a world conference to talk about the development of Islam. In the period of AR. Fakhruddin, Lukman was the only person who took responsibility as a spokesman for the Muhammadiyah for ten years.

 

2 KH Drs Ahmad Azhar Bashir MA

 

Azhar Ahmad Bashir was born in Yogyakarta, November 21, 1928 and died in the same city on June 28, 1994 at the age of 65 years. During the revolutionary period, Azhar Bashir joined the Battalion 36 Hezbollah military unit of Yogyakarta. This Charismatic leader was known as a blend between the scholars and intellectuals. Azhar was known as simple person, yet had an Islamic outlook and scientific depth.

 

Regarding to his advantages, Azhar was trusted to be the chairman of Pemuda Muhammadiyah when this new organization was founded in 1954 and he received his legal status in the 1956 Pemuda Muhammadiyah Congress in Palembang. Shortly after, Azhar got a scholarship to study at the Department of Literature, University of Baghdad and handed a master in Islamic Studies at Cairo University.

 

On his return to Indonesia, he became a lecturer at Gadjah Mada University and took charge of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) from 1990 to 1995 and member of the House of Representative of Indonesia (MPR-RI) in the period of 1993-1998. At the 42 Muhammadiyah Congress in Yogyakarta in 1995, Azhar Bashir was elected as chairman of Muhammadiyah replacing KH AR Fakhruddin. Azhar also believed to lead institutions of Islamic jurisprudence on the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).

 

3 Drs HS Prodjokusumo

 

Sudarsono Prodjokusumo was born in Sleman, Yogyakarta, on August 22, 1922 and died in Jakarta, July 31, 1996. In 1950, he followed the course of the military administration at Nederlands Militerire Missie (NMM) in Bandung. In late 1952 he was assigned to the Ministry of Defence as a young officer in Jakarta and settled in Kebayoran Baru. In that place, he showed his role in Muhammadiyah movement clearly. Along with Betawi people, he pioneered the establishment of Muhammadiyah branch of Kebayoran Baru.

 

Prodjokusumo put his most attention to Muhammadiyah education. In 1957, he initiated collaboration with the Ministry of Religious Affairs in the establishment of Perguruan Tinggi Pendidikan Guru (PTPG), which was merged in 1858 into the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) of Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta (UMJ). In 1965, FKIP UMJ then stood alone by the name of Muhammadiyah Teachers' Training College of Jakarta (IKIP), and from 1997 was named the Muhammadiyah University of Prof. Dr. Hamka (Uhamka).

 

To improve the quality of education at the University of Muhammadiyah, Prodjokusumo formed Muhammadiyah University Board of Trustees after Muhammadiyah Congress in 1985. In addition to the field of education, he was also the originator of the founding of the Association of Employees of Muhammadiyah (IKM) and the Association of Artists and Cultural (ISB) in 1965. He also spearheaded the establishment of Unit Santunan Duka Kebayoran Baru and Pembina Kesehatan Umat (PKU) of Taman Puring.

 

4. Drs H Sutrisno Muhdam

 

Sutrisno Muhdam was ​​born in Klaten, Central Java, October 14, 1938 and closed his age in Yogyakarta, December 12, 2012. The role of Sutrisno was so important not only because he had held several important positions in Muhammadiyah, but also he was a witness who could link up the history of Muhammadiyah from one event to other events.

 

During a student at the Muhammadiyah Teachers' Training College of Jakarta (UHAMKA), Sutrisno became one of the characters that initiated the establishment of Muhammadiyah Students Association (IMM). He was also involved in the formation of Muhammadiyah Students Association (IPM) in Mu'allimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. He is chairman of the Central board of Pemuda Muhammadiyah for two periods, 1975-1980 and 1980-1985. He also joined the central board of Muhammadiyah in a long period, from 1985 to 2000.

 

Sutrisno was Muhammadiyah figure who invited the involvement of the National Armed Forces in the establishment of Komando Kesiapsiagaan Angkatan Muda Muhammadiyah (KOKAM) against the movement of G.30.S PKI. He also became a member of the Committee on Reform of nine Islamic leaders who attended the invitation of Suharto to the palace on May 18, 1998 relating to the first statement of the outgoing president and the reform agenda. In 1997-1998, Sutrisno became a member of the MPR group representatives, and in 1998-2002 he was listed as a member of the Supreme Advisory Council for Economic commission.

 

 

5. Dr. Muhammad Suherman

 

Muhammad Suherman was born in Ngawi on December 26, 1926 and closed his age in Surabaya on March 5, 1987. Suherman can be called as one of the legends in the history of Muhammadiyah in East Java. Besides being a famous doctor, he also has a totality in supporting Muhammadiyah, especially in the field of education.

 

In his college, Suherman was an activist of Islamic Students Association (HMI), respected organization in East Java. After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine in University of Airlangga (Airlangga University) in 1960, he immediately lined up as a lecturer at his alma mater and opened his clinic in Krian and Surabaya. During his time as a doctor, Suherman was known as "the people's doctor" because he concerned to the poor patients.

 

The loyality and totality to the organization of Suherman began as he came out of the civil servants in 1978 in order to be active in the Muhammadiyah although he was promoted to director in one of the units at Airlangga University at that time. In Muhammadiyah, he made ​​a significant contribution in the establishment of Muhammadiyah Surabaya Teachers' Training College in 1981, as well as Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya (UMS) in 1985 where he then became rector.

 

In 1978-1985 Suherman placed position of vice chairman II of the East Java Provincial board of Muhammadiyah (PWM) who headed the Assembly of Teaching and Culture (now the Assembly of Elementary and Secondary Education). During the given mandate, Suherman showed his significant role in the development of charitable efforts in the field of education and health. At that time he also synergized with Dr. Mutadi as vice chairman III of the PWM, who was responsible to the Assembly of Society Welfare Guidance (PKU). The synergy of two doctors was marked by the establishment of Muhammadiyah polyclinics in almost all districts in East Java.

 

 

 

6. Drs HM Al-Kindi Djazman

 

Djazman Al-Kindi was one of the key persons behind the founding of Muhammadiyah Students Association (IMM) in 1964. Before the establishment of the IMM, Muhammadiyah youths were still the members of the Student Department of Pemuda Muhammadiyah.

 

Since 1961, the Djazman who was studying at UGM with a number of other young leaders from various campuses generated ideas to break away from the Pemuda Muhammadiyah and formed their own organization. The idea was proven three years later with the establishment of the IMM.

 

In 1979, Djazman who was then Rector of Muhammadiyah Teacher Training Institute (IKIP) of Surakarta initiated the founding of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta (UMS) by combining the Muhammadiyah Teachers' Training College of Surakarta and the Muhammadiyah Islamic Institute (IAIM) of Surakarta. UMS then was officially established in 1981 with the issuing of the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture.

 

Djazman also became key person in the establishment of the Assembly of Higher Education Research and Development (MPTPP) of Muhammadiyah in 1986.  Formerly, the assembly was named Assembly Education and Teaching (MPP). However, regarding to the fact that the Muhammadiyah universities improved rapidly, the name was changed into MPTPP where Djazman became its chairman in the first period in 1986-1990.
