General Chairman of Muhammadiyah Central Executive Takes a Speech in Sendai Japan

Prof. Dr. Din Syamsuddin, the General Chairman of Muhammadiyah Central Executive, was in Japan from 15 until 17 of March 2015. Din was invited as a speaker at the International Symposium in The Roles of Religion on Disaster Risk Reduction. The ssymposium was held as the commemoration of the four-year tsunami that struck eastern Japan on March 11, 2011.

The commemoration itselfwas attended by many leaders such as UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and Vice President Jusuf Kalla. In his presentation, Muhammadiyah participatedcin tackling natural disasters, from the tsunami in Aceh, Yogyakarta earthquake, eruption of Merapi to Wasior flood, flood Maumere and Sinabung eruption. Muhamamdiyah humanitarian actions through MDMC (Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center) received appreciation from various circles in Japan, MDMC also participated in Hayyan Philippines, and Gaza Palestine. Dr. Rachmawati of MDMC was also present and spoke in Sendai.

DinSyamsuddin as President of the Asian Conference on Religions for Peace (ACRP) also asked to read the Islamic prayers at Memorial Park, Memorial Japanese Tsunami in Sendai that killed 200 thousand people.

The gathering inSendai Japan itself has agreed on efforts to reduce the effects of natural disasters. The risk of the result of natural disasters over the years, in principle, could be significantly reduced approximately in 2030, within a new framework that will be adopted by the countries that present at the Conference.

 The gathering in Sendai, Japan noted that the losses due to natural disasters, including the tsunami in Sendai, Japan, reported no less than 700,000 people were killed, while 1.4 million others were injured, and resulted in the emergence of 23 million people were now homeless.
