UMY: Writing in the mass media is a part of social change contribution

Yogyakarta-The writing spirit among civitas academia (lecturers and students) is still high. In this cyber era, everybody is free to upload his writing in blog or facebook in order that everybody else can read. That is a positive signal for writing, and writing in mass media can be developed. After all, writing in the mass media shows somebody's competency, especially for students and lecturers as young intellectuals.

That was stated by Fajar Junaedi, S.sos, M.Si, a lecturer of Communications Department at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY), who is also writing a book titled "Bonek: The First and The Biggest", after delivering his talk during Creative Writing Seminar on Wednesday (5/10) at Mini Theater, UMY Language Training Center.

Fajar said that writing activity is actually not simply writing. According to Fajar, writing is making logic ideas. Writing means making logic ideas, rationalizing, elaborating thesis and anti-thesis, so it is able to contribute knowledge to people. "By writing in media, we can take part in doing social change in public," said the broadcasting lecturer who said his writing failed to be published in media a dozen times.

He said Indonesian people exprience jumping media era. "In western countries, people expereince step by step era, namely oral, printing, and electronic. Different from western countries, Indonesia experience oral era, then jump to electronic era. Literacy is not high, but people already know television. Consequently it makes people passive," said he enthusiactically,

In the meantime, another speaker Filosa Gita Sukmono, S.Kom gave motivation to write. "Writing is not a talent. Writing is learning. When our wirting is rejected by media, revise quickly and send it again. Learning from mountain climbing philosophy saying 'learn step by step and have a fighting spirit;" he said.

During the seminar, Filosa also gave some tips in order that our writing can be published in media. She said that a writer should pay attention to the language style of media, media ideology, the language used.

The event coordinator Miftahul Arzak explained that the event aimed to share writing knowledge by inviting competent speakers. “Most students like writing, but they do not know yet writing tips in order that their writing can be published, especially in mass media. Through this seminar, hopefully our friends' writing in the future can be published in the mass media," said the communications student of 2009 batch who promoted his own book "Koloni Lebah Dari Dua Pulau”.
