Many politicians own media, people should be critical: Muhammadiyah

Yogyakarta - People should be critical of programs broadcasted by media, either in mode of Audio Visual, Audio, printed, or online media, due many politicians now possess  media which is suspected to lead public opinion to certain interest.

This was expressed by Arif Jamali Muis chairman Wisdom and Public Policy Institute (LHKP) Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta province in building DIY PWM, Jl Gedongkuning, Yoggyakarta, on Monday (12/12/2012). Arif said that the octopus media touching people circle ground is a great asset for politicians to easily reach out to various circles. "The politicians, both from a chairman of political party, counsel and so have put their nails in various media businesses, ranging from television, radio, online media, up to newspaper, that are easy to reach every segment of society. With a large media market in the country, media would be very effective in leading public opinion on certain cases directly or indirectly related to the interests of media owners.

"Indications of leading public opinion through the media are clearly visible when the television A views certain case inversely proportional to B. Media A will strengthen his opinion by bringing in some speakers with a tendency to station owners, and it also happens in television B, so significant difference in addressing the case is strongly apparent," he explained. Differences in attitudes according to Arif became strong indication of the existence of interests from certain groups. Arif views, a few television also builds images of their owners in news, as well as reducing the news portion of his political opponents.

Further according to Arif, with media phenomena fulfilled by certain interest, the critical attitude of the society becomes powerful filter in protecting the opinion flow. Arif said, public should be able to think clearly and be able to distinguish which ones are "set" or presented objectively. "The magnitude of media power Indonesia is dependent upon role of community living in critically viewing various programs and news in print or electronic media and not to be stuck in any interest stepping Indonesia down into a deeper hole," he concluded.
