Central Board of Muhammadiyah On Sri Lanka Tragedy

Christians throughout the world were shocked by Easter Sunday explosions in the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on April 21st, 2019. The bomb blasted three churches, namely St. Antony’s Shrine, St. Sebastian’s Church, and Zion Church. The bombing also shook public places as hotels, while the detonators were found near an airport.

The terrorist attacks assault global humanity and threaten peace, concord, and an interfaith brotherhood.

Responding to the bomb blasts rendering 207 killed and 450 injured,

1. Central Board of Muhammadiyah condemns terrorist atrocities in Sri Lanka killing Easter worshippers and foreigners. Central Board of Muhammadiyah expected that the terrorists are arrested and sentenced in accordance with law.

2. Central Board of Muhammadiyah supports each effort of the Government of Sri Lanka to save the victims and recover the national security.

3. Central Board of Muhammadiyah appeals the government of the Republic of Indonesia and the people to remain vigilant since global development dynamics, particularly regarding terrorism, are a solemn attack. Thus, security authorities should synergize with civil society, including socio-religious organizations.

4. Central Board of Muhammadiyah prompts all people to uphold peace principles and values and to respect human dignity.
